There are about 50 different groups of plastics, with hundreds of different varieties. All types of plastic are recyclable. To make sorting and thus recycling easier, the American Society of Plastics Industry developed a standard marking code to help consumers identify and sort the main types of plastic. In this example the PET label shows the bottle is made from Polyethylene terephthalate. PET is the most easily and widely recycled plastic in the world.
The other icon shown on this packaging is simply a reminder not to throw the bottle on the street (or in a bush!) when finished with. Using a garbage bin is definately preferable to littering the environment but the bottle is still likely to end up in an land fill site somewhere where it could take decades to bio-degrade.

Interesting. (I mean your commentary.. the picture in itself speaks for itself but calling it "interesting" is a can of worms ;P) I really didn't know this was a standard - I figured there was just a bunch of labels manufacturers could use to stick on their products if they wishes. The fact that there is a governing body behind it gives me a place to write into when I get annoyed at things not being properly marked. Sorting packages into the appropriate bin is always a hassle, and I'm never quite sure whether I'm throwing away a "hard" plastic or "soft" one.
so you've enlightened my ignorance here, and thus helped the planet towards a cleaner future :)
I shouldn't post early in the morning. It really does come out as a ramble. :)
I like your shot as well as your very selective focus. Nicely done.
The selective focus technique is interesting. Although I somehow don't feel it was done in-camera. It definitely brings the attention to where it should be.
Wow great dof! Those little graphics really jump out you here!
I can remember when that litter sign first came out in the 1970s. It was regarded as little more than a curiosity. In fact protecting the environment in the 1970s was the preserve of so called "Hippy-types" and yet today the vast majority of sensible people are waking up to the fact that action needs to be taken to protect our beautiful planet. That one little sign on this image is a reminder to me how attitudes can change over the decades.
